Texas Tiny Houses

After updating my Small House Society membership this morning, I was looking through the links and came across this. The Texas Tiny House. They harvest old lumber and architectural elements and concentrate them into a tiny footprint so they are just gems.

A New Obsession

a-new-obsession

Katie and I have started collecting Glidden ceramics. Specifically the Menagerie patterns. eBay is our main resource for acquisitions, but we’ve gotten one platter from Twice Upon a Time in Brattleboro.

Katie got me a book on Glidden ceramics for Christmas. Unfortunately the company, which is from Alfred NY home of SUNY’s ceramics school, went out [...]

Karrie Jacobs finds cheap houses

As often happens over Thanksgiving when you are the daughter of an architect and art historian who is now an aspiring urban/suburban planner-in-training, the line of conversation veered toward new approaches to living in spaces. My mother announced she just signed up for a new magazine as a inaugural member. This magazine to [...]

Small Houses for Katrina Victims

Katrina Cottages or Cusato Cottages are actually a lot bigger than the tiny houses that Tumbleweed Tiny House Company makes, but of course they are made to be multiple person dwellings.

The San Francisco Chronicle has some good pictures of the cottages and another one of hundreds of cottages around the turn of the Century in [...]

Mirror Mirror

I just bought a fog free shower mirror that might be the first truly working fog-free mirror that I know of. It’s secret? you fill up a reservoir in the back with hot water. When your done, you pour the water out.

It works pretty well.

I found it in the Whole Body.

Small house update

The NY Times has an article about a two story house in Washington statet that is 1,000 square feet on two stories. It looks a lot more modern than the last ones we showed here.

Roman Baths

I’m watching an old Nova on Roman baths. They were heated radiantly. In the show they make a new Roman bath.

It’s a good look into the engineering of Rome. This was a civilisation that built very large and elaborate structures without power-tools.

The water is heated with a boiler. The boiler and the radiant heater use [...]

Recycling Week – Small Houses

In terms of construction, embodied energy is the amount of energy required to create, and transport any component to the worksite, and then assemble it there. It can be measured in calories, BTUs, whatever. but when trying to minimize the total impact on the environment, embodied energy is a big thing to think about.

You can [...]

Groovy Q Dirty Linens Sheets Boxers Lounge Pants – Gift Wrap

Another one from design*sponge: Country casual goes naughty. The giftwrap has the best preview images, but the bedding is great to. No matter what way you swing, you’re bound to appreciate these gay and bondage themed patterns.

Chatchada-Tableware

Chatchada-Tableware

design*sponge led me to this one. It’s a set of three different sized round plates that have an equal sized slice cut out of them. Neat.

A while ago, I tried to make a service of plates that were for speciffic serving sizes, and this makes me think that if I start taking ceramics classes [...]
